William Downs

Director

William Downs is presently an owner of a durable medical equipment and supply business; Wheelchair Sales & Services, Inc. WS&S Medical is very proud that it is owned and operated by paralyzed American Veterans.

Bill was born and raised in the Chicago area. However he would find himself on the west coast at a young age where he completed his education at California State University, Fullerton. From there, Bill volunteered for the United States Coast Guard during the Vietnam War where he served until he was injured and medically retired. He went on to become a successful businessman and father. He has one grown son, Matthew of whom he is very proud.

Bill has volunteered his time and knowledge to various organizations including Jaycees, Lions and Kiwanis. For quite a few years he served on the Board for Paralyzed Veterans of America as Treasurer. He served on the Village Planning Board for the city of Lemont, IL. As well as the City of Lemont Tornado Relief Fund, which successfully raised over $250, 000.00 to aid the residents most affected by a devastating tornado.

One of Bill’s joys had been coaching children’s hockey for St. Jude Hockey Club for ages 4yrs - 18yrs olds. He also created the Wheelchair Wolves sports team. He has competed nationally playing wheelchair softball, football and hockey as well. An avid pool player Bill initiated the Annual Chicago Wheelchair 8-Ball Classic which draws wheelchair participants worldwide.

One of Bill’s passions, closest to his heart, is being a foster “parent” to many Labrador retriever dogs. Over the years, he has taken in dogs that due to illness, neglect or simply no longer wanted, would have otherwise met their demise by euthanasia. Bill gives them the love and attention they need until they are well enough and ready to be adopted by a loving family. As difficult as it is to give the dogs away, it is equally as rewarding to know they had been given the second chance they so deserve.

Bill is honored to be a part of the Park Lawn family and is looking forward to providing his services to such a wonderful organization.
